Fangoria has launched First In Fright: The Fangoria Compendium, a limited edition book and digital archive project that invites fans to preserve nearly 50 years of horror history. This project will be available on Kickstarter.

First In Fright details Fangoria’s history since 1979, presenting hand-picked stories from the magazine’s archives with contemporary commentary, never-before-seen stories, and rare behind-the-scenes photos. The book features 300 pages of full-color images, analytical articles, and interviews from a variety of voices in the horror field. This project unites past and present Fangoria editors, journalists, artisans, and horror filmmakers to explore the history and evolution of the genre.

The book includes exclusive contributions from Joe Bob Briggs, Sandy King, Ernest Dickerson, Neil Marshall, David Dastmalchian, Bryan Fuller, Don Mancini, Mike Flanagan, Barbara Crampton, Devon Sawa, Jeffrey Reddick, Tom Savini, Clive Barker, and a foreword written by director John Carpenter.

The Kickstarter campaign also debuts the Fangoria Digital Archive, a fully searchable, indexed, and interactive remastered collection of the magazine’s complete original editions (issues 1 to 344). Each issue is scanned and enhanced to provide fans with over 25,000 pages of restored content that can be viewed in both the original layout and in digital, text-readable format. Backers who receive a copy of First in Fright will also receive access to the archives.

“Fangoria has been at the forefront of horror journalism for as long as horror journalism has existed,” said Meredith Borders, senior editor leading the project. “Tens of thousands of pages of genre knowledge, history and insight will now be at the fingertips of the fans who made it all possible.”

Fans can currently support Fangoria’s campaign on Kickstarter and receive an exclusive version of First in Fright: The Fangoria Compendium, which includes a special first edition packed with bonus materials, as well as other collector items such as a foil slipcase, limited edition merchandise, and a remastered reprint of the Fangoria first edition.
