“Evil Dead” star Bruce Campbell revealed Monday that he has been diagnosed with cancer, but said it is “treatable,” if not curable. Campbell said she will have to put work on the back burner while she receives treatment.
The 67-year-old actor posted a message to his fans on X, writing, “Hello, these days when someone has a health problem, it’s called an ‘opportunity’. So let’s go with it. I have one of them too. It’s also called a type of cancer that is ‘curable’ instead of ‘treatable’.” Sorry if I was shocked – I was.
me too.
“The good news is, I won’t go into too much detail. I’m posting this because professionally, I have to change a few things and put my looks, my shortcomings, and work in general on the back burner for my treatment. My plan is to recover as much as possible over the summer so I can tour with my new movie, Ernie & Emma, this fall.”
“There are some downsides to having to cancel this summer. I’m very disappointed. Medical needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand in hand. That’s it. I’m not looking for sympathy or advice. I’d like to share this information in case any false information leaks out. I just want to stay ahead of the curve (and it will be). Don’t fear, I’m a tough old son and I have great support, so I think I’ll have some time to spare. As always, you’re the greatest fan in the world, and I look forward to seeing you soon! ,” Campbell wrote, concluding with “Lots of love.”
Campbell starred in and directed the road trip comedy “Ernie and Emma,” about a widowed pear salesman who travels to scatter his wife’s ashes. An advance screening in Portland, Oregon, has already sold out.
He first played Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead in 1981, before returning in The Evil Dead II. Campbell will serve as an executive producer on the new film “Evil Dead Burn,” which is scheduled to be released in theaters in June.
