Ethan Hawk is pleased to have lost to the lead role from Titanic’s Leonardo DiCaprio.
“I don’t think I handled that success the same way Leo did,” Hawk, 54, told UK’s GQ in an interview released on Monday, September 1st.
DiCaprio, 50, played Jack Dawson, the romantic lead in the 1997 historic epic about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
Despite his hesitation about how DiCaprio dealt with the fame that attracted him to his role in the Titanic, Hawk had already starred in the Dead Poets Association, Reality Bite, and Sunrise before the Oscar-winning film was released.
DiCaprio starred in the Titanic opposite Kate Winslet. The film mainly took his career to new heights, paving the way for the future roles of Catch Me You You in 2002, 2004’s the Aviator, and 2006 Blood Diamond.

Hawk was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at Crime Drama Training Day in 2001. Despite not winning, he recalled his co-star Denzel Washington whispering to him after losing the night. “I want to improve my award status.”
In 1997, Hawk instead co-starred on the other side of Gattaka’s current ex-wife, Uma Thurman. The couple tied the knot in 1998, and Thurman, 55, filed for divorce in 2004. The pair officially split in 2005.

“It’s humiliating,” Hawk said of the caution surrounding their divorce. “Even when they say something positive, it’s almost humiliating.”
The previous couple shares their 27-year-old daughter Maya and son Levon, 23.
