Elle Fanning really shined Wednesday night as she paid tribute to her friend, director Sofia Coppola.
Fanning paid homage to the design house she already has a deep relationship with by wearing a straight-off-the-runway look from Chanel’s first collection by creative director Matthew Blazey.
The French luxury brand hosted the MoMA Film Benefit in New York City, honoring Coppola and bringing in several style stars to support.
Fanning chose a cream-colored crewneck sweater and skirt, both of which had sequins woven into the material itself. Loose, sparkly tops have given way to flowing midi skirts.
The pocketed skirt design is just one example of how the brand’s new creative director is following in the footsteps of Coco Chanel, designing for women with both style and practicality.
She accessorized with gold point-toe pumps, a round cream-colored clutch, and Cartier jewelry.
Fanning co-starred with Coppola in the film “Somewhere” when she was 11 years old, and again seven years later in “The Beguiled,” a Southern Gothic thriller with an A-list cast.
According to Vogue, she told those in the room: “I didn’t go to college, but I went to New Orleans with Sofia, Kirsten Dunst, and Nicole Kidman[for The Beguiled]. So when I was 18, Sofia shaped me in another formative period of my life.”
Additionally, the longtime friends and collaborators wore coordinated looks for the night, with Coppola opting for a black dress version of Fanning’s glittery cream set.
Stylist Samantha McMillen shared a photo of the actress’ full-body look before the event, while Fanning also posted a sweet tribute to Instagram featuring a candid photo from the night.
“A magical evening at @themuseumofmodernart celebrating the one and only Sofia. Every day I ask myself the motto we all should live by 🎀🎀🎀: ‘WWSD’ (What would Sofia do?) 🎀🎀🎀 @sofiacoppola.”
And if Chanel’s look choices mean anything, she also asked, “What would Sofia wear?” Too.
