This year’s LACMA Art + Film Gala, held Saturday night, once again proved that it is one of the most glamorous events in Los Angeles this year.
Elle Fanning, Kaia Gerber and her mother Cindy Crawford, Lorde, Angela Bassett, Cynthia Erivo, Samara Weaving, Benito Skinner, Tessa Thompson, Emma Roberts and Paris Hilton were among the best dressed of the night.
The 2025 fundraiser honored “Sinners” filmmaker Ryan Coogler and visual artist Mary Corse. The night ended with a performance by Doja Cat.
Coogler, who was honored by Bassett, gave a moving speech about his friendship with the late social justice activist Michael Rutt, who was shot and killed in a home invasion in 2023. Mr. Rutt was the son of Michelle Sutter, founding director of Sundance Institute’s feature film program, and producer David Rutt. “Michael was changing the world,” Coogler said.
Mr. Coogler also recalled becoming a screenwriter during his college years. “I never thought of myself as an artist. I had been a football player for some time,” he said. “I was an undergrad at the University of Southern California on a football scholarship when, on a whim, I was encouraged to write screenplays.”
The “Sinners” filmmaker said that when he first arrived in Los Angeles, he felt like he was at his “weakest” and “rock bottom” because he missed his hometown community of Oakland, California. But now, he says, “This has become my second home. I’ve made memories here and made friends here.”
LACMA Art+Film, in partnership with Gucci and co-chaired by One Battle After Another stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Eva Chou, supports the arts institution’s efforts to put film at the center of the museum’s curatorial programs, while also funding its broader mission. This includes exhibitions, collections, and educational programs in addition to screenings that explore the intersection of art and film.
