One of the cast members for the upcoming season of “Drag Race: Philippines” has died at the age of 27, forcing the show to be canceled after production had already begun.
Drag queen Misua, aka Jason Elvie Tai, passed away in her sleep this week. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
The sad news was announced on social media by World of Wonder, the production company responsible for RuPaul’s Drag Race and its various editions around the world.
“We are heartbroken to learn that the talented Queen Misua, who was scheduled to appear on season 4 of Drag Race: Philippines, passed away in her sleep on the morning of April 2nd,” the post said, along with a photo of Misua. “She brought light, artistry and joy to those around her and she will be sorely missed.”
“We have paused production to care for and support our cast and crew during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone who loved her,” the post continued.
“We are in contact with her family, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time.”
The post also received a ton of comments from other stars of the “Drag Race” series.
“Sending you lots of love,” wrote Michelle Visage, a longtime U.S. judge.
“Devastated! Sending love to everyone involved,” wrote “Drag Race UK” contestant Blue Hydrangea.
“Sending so much love and light to Misa and her family,” Drag Race US finalist Sapphire Crystal wrote.
Fans of the series also asked World of Wonder not to edit Misua’s filming for this season outside of the show, out of respect for her legacy.
Misua’s family also paid their respects on social media, writing on Facebook:
“He will be greatly missed by his loving family and close friends.”
Misua’s death comes just weeks after a contestant on the Australian version of Drag Race Down Under passed away after a battle with cancer.
Maxi Shields, 51, is one of the most recognizable faces in Sydney’s LGBT nightlife and rose to global fame after competing on season 1 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under in 2021.
The Sydney star, whose real name was Christopher Elliott, died in February after being diagnosed with throat cancer.
She received a funeral procession on Oxford Street for a final farewell.
