What you need to know
Danny Regan may be in Boston now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean his old partner won’t make an appearance.
“Boston Blue,” the new spinoff of CBS’ long-running police drama “Blue Bloods,” premiered on Friday, Oct. 17. Fans of the original series will get their first look at Donnie Wahlberg’s character as he travels to a new city after an unfortunate family accident.
But the premiere episode not only provided insight into Danny’s relocation, but also informed viewers about the whereabouts of some familiar faces from the Blue Bloods world.
While the episode was primarily introduced as a series revolving around a new law enforcement family (Sonequa Martin-Green’s Lena Silver and her own loved ones), it also revealed why Danny was sent to Beantown in the first place. Specifically, Danny’s son, Boston police officer Sean (Mika Ammonsen), is seriously injured himself while trying to rescue people from a fire that turns into a building fire. As a result, Danny heads to Boston to visit his hospitalized son, and ultimately decides to solve the case himself.
About three minutes into the episode, Boston Blue reveals what happened to Danny and his NYPD detective partner. Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), since the events of Blue Bloods.
While at home (shirtless), Danny receives a phone call. Maria was right there to help.

“I thought I told you to turn off the ringer when you were staying over,” Danny said playfully as Maria handed him the phone.
“That’s your phone, smart guy,” she joked.
That’s when Danny learns that Sean is in the hospital, and his stay in Boston snowballs into being longer than he originally imagined.
Danny’s sister Erin Regan (Bridget Moynahan) also showed up at a Boston hospital to support Danny and Sean in the season premiere, and there was also another moment of insight into Danny and Maria’s apparent romance. “You better pack your bags, Maria packed your clothes,” she said. “By the way, you should call her, she’s really worried about you.”
Blue Bloods ended after 14 seasons in December 2024, but it was unclear whether Danny and Maria actually sparked a romance after Danny invited his longtime partner out for pizza in the final season. Wahlberg previously told Us Weekly that the characters are “standing on the threshold of possibility.”
Well, Boston Blue certainly reveals some things about those possibilities.

PEOPLE released a trailer for the series earlier this month, in which Lena describes her bond with law enforcement as “a big happy, kind of chaotic family.” Also starring were Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Gloria Reuben, and Ernie Hudson.
The premiere episode of Boston Blue saw New York City police detectives work with Boston detectives to investigate a “fatal fire” at a high-tech company. “Dig deeper and you uncover complex secrets involving facial recognition technology, family ties, and a quest for justice that brings the Silver and Reagan families closer together,” the synopsis teases.

Wahlberg previously wrote on Instagram: “So excited to continue the tradition, share many surprises, answer unanswered questions, and welcome fans to the series.”
