“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has added more names to its star-studded video game cast, including Donald Glover as Yoshi the green dinosaur.
The newly announced cast also includes Luis Guzman as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen. Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri made the announcement during Monday’s Nintendo Direct livestream, where he also released a new trailer for the animated sequel.
Chris Pratt will return to voice Mario as he heads into space in the 2023 sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The returning cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. The sequel will also feature Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., who made his debut in the 2007 video game “Super Mario Galaxy,” and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.
After defeating Bowser in the original movie, Mario, Luigi, and Peach return for another adventure where they must face off against the evil King Bowser and his son. They are also transported into space and explore various planets, including a fiery volcanic world, an underwater planet, and Technoland with its neon, gravity-defying obstacles. In the new trailer, the heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom team up with Rosalina and the egg-laying dinosaur Yoshi (who is usually silent except for the occasional “Yoshi!”). The sequel features Wart and the Honey Queen as enemies, as well as fan-favorite character Bird.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and will be released in theaters on April 1st by Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo.
