Diane Keaton’s health rapidly deteriorated in recent months leading up to her death.
A friend of the actress told People magazine, “She abruptly declined. It was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”
Friends say her rapid decline was “unexpected.”
Keaton and her loved ones have also chosen to keep her health issues private.
“In her final months, she was surrounded by only her closest family, who chose to keep things private,” the source said. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was going on.”
But there was one worrying sign in March. She listed her “dream home” in Los Angeles for $29 million, surprising friends, considering she had previously said she intended to live there permanently, People magazine reported.
Officials also told the outlet that Keaton was known to walk his dog daily in the Brentwood area, but had not been seen in recent months.
“She loved her community,” the source said. “Just a few months ago, she walked her dog every day. No matter the weather, she always wore the same outfit, with a hat and her signature sunglasses.”
“She was always so sweet, funny and talkative,” the source continued. “She talked to her dogs as if they were people. She had a quirky, old-Hollywood aura about her. She was very, very special.”
Keaton died in California, a family spokesperson said Saturday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
She is mourning the loss of her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in her 50s.
The Oscar-winning actress looked healthy and happy in her last Instagram post, which she shared in April. Keaton was all smiles as he shared an adorable photo with his dog Reggie.
