Diane Keaton’s family has released a statement revealing the cause of her death. Her family thanked fans for their messages of support and told People magazine that the actress died of pneumonia on Saturday.
“The Keaton family is extremely grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support we have received over the past few days on behalf of our beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11th,” the statement said.
The family suggested that her fans can make donations to local food banks or animal shelters in her memory. “She loved animals and was a staunch supporter of the homeless community, so a donation to a local food bank or animal shelter in her memory would be a wonderful and much-appreciated tribute to her,” her family told People magazine.
Keaton died Saturday in Los Angeles. Paramedics arrived at her home and transported her to a nearby hospital.
According to People, a friend said her health had been “dramatically deteriorating” in recent months, and that only her close family knew about it, and that she had chosen to “keep things private.”
Since Saturday, tributes have poured in from co-stars and friends for the Oscar-winning actress, who was known as a passionate architectural preservationist and animal lover in addition to appearing in a number of high-profile films. Starting Friday, AMC Theaters will re-screen “Annie Hall” and “Something’s Gotta Give” for one week in honor of her memory. Keaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall and was nominated for Best Actress for Reds, Something’s Gotta Give, and Marvin’s Room.
