The bright yellow overalls-wearing darling henchman is back this July with his supervillain antics in full swing. Only this time, their adventures are set in the world of 1920s Hollywood, and these cuddly creatures put their own spin on the monster movie genre and display previously unknown screenwriting talent.
During the Super Bowl, Universal Pictures released the first trailer for Minions 3, titled Minions & Monsters. This is the seventh film in the “Despicable Me” series. This new comedy film from animation studio Illumination is the sequel to Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022).
This time, the Minions go on a journey to find the terrifying creatures that appear as villains in monster movies, rather than Gru’s assistants. They partner up with a cute green creature, then face off against a sea beast, a giant pink rabbit with a bad attitude, and Mum, who accidentally tears a bone out of a linen wrapper.
“Minions & Monsters” will be produced by Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, and Bill Ryan, executive producer of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” The film was written by Brian Lynch (Minions and The Secret Life of Pets) and directed by Academy Award nominee Pierre Coffin. Coffin was also the director of the first three Despicable Me films and the first Minions film, and has voiced the Minions since they first appeared in 2010.
The Minions series focuses on the antics of fun-sized yellow creatures searching for an evil mastermind boss and eventually encountering Despicable Me leader Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) at the end of the first Minions movie.
“Minions & Monsters” follows the blockbuster success of “Despicable Me 4,” which grossed $230 million worldwide in 2024. More than 15 years after the release of Despicable Me, the series has grossed more than $5 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing animated film series in the world.
Minions: The Rise of Me, which premiered around July 4, 2022, both grossed $125 million during the holiday period, followed by Despicable Me 3 (2017) with $99 million and 2013’s Despicable Me 2 with $83.5 million.
“Minions & Monsters” will be released in theaters on July 1st.
