Demi Lovato took Poot out of the basement.
To celebrate Halloween, the “Fast” singer brought back the Poot meme that was popular 10 years ago. On Thursday, October 30, Lovato, 33, posted an Instagram carousel showing off her 2025 costumes. Pooto was born on Tumblr in 2015 when a fan took a faded photo of Lovato and created a fictional backstory by claiming she was her estranged twin sister who had lived her entire life locked in a basement.
The first photo includes the original 2015 snap for reference next to the pop star in costume, recreating the look perfectly.
She then posed in her garage as if Poot were some scary creature stalking her. It also included Pooto’s creepy shadow. Lovato later posted a TikTok of herself pretending to be Poot, screaming for help, and trying to get out of the garage.

Her TikTok continued, adding videos to the ongoing “house tour” trend in which users showed off their homes to songs from Sabrina Carpenter’s album Man’s Best Friend. The video featured Poot showing off all her “home” essentials, including bubble wrap, a water heater and cleaning supplies.
In addition to the cheeky TikTok, Lovato added a snap of herself posing as Poot, as well as an original photo of herself in her makeup bag.
Lovato concluded by sharing a video of her glam squad helping her transform into Poot as she sat in the makeup chair.
“Happy Halloween and have a happy week!!! I thought I’d vent this since I’ve been stuck in these times 🔒🤍,” she captioned the post.
Lovato’s husband Jutes commented: “Well Halloween is over. Pack your bags. This year it’s Demi’s. Good luck next year.”

This isn’t the first time Lovato has made fun of this meme. Most recently, a short image of the meme was included in the “Fast” music video released on August 1st.
She also told PAPER magazine in September that she accepts the memes about her. “An incredibly powerful way to take back power is to own the meme,” she says. “Because if I’m laughing, no one can laugh at me. I’m laughing at me.”
A few months ago, she joked about the photo on TikTok, lip-syncing to a soundbite with the caption, “When someone asks me to get Poot out of the basement…”
“Wow, what an offer,” Lovato gushed into the audio. She captioned the video, “And I’ll never let her out.”

In August 2023, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer celebrated his birthday with a cake featuring Poot’s photo.
“When Poot went viral online, I thought it was a real photo of me and it really sucked,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in July of the same year. “And I thought, ‘Oh, no. That’s a really bad angle.'” But Poot had been Photoshopped. Later, I realized that it wasn’t my face, so I felt better. ”
“But it was obviously weird when it went viral,” she said, adding, “It’s really funny looking back.”
