It took Eddie Murphy a while to forgive David Spade for his infamous “Saturday Night Live” rant.
On a recent episode of the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, Spade said in a segment on “Weekend Update” that it took him “25 years” to win back “SNL” alum Murphy after filming his movie “Vampires in Brooklyn.”
“It was weird to go from being a super fan to being turned off by him overnight and then spending 25 years trying to get him back,” Spade said.
“Early on, there were some bumps in the road,” he added. “I was on ‘Weekend Update’ on ‘SNL,’ and it was my first time on the show, and I was making fun of all the celebrities, and I was making fun of him, and it didn’t go well. And then he called me and we were able to do it together.”
Spade explained that during the confrontation, he “didn’t fight back much” because he felt “guilty” for saying bad things about his “hero” on air.
During the segment in question, Spade made fun of several celebrities, including Murphy. In response to the box office failure of Wes Craven’s Vampires in Brooklyn, Spade said of Murphy, “Look, kids, this is a falling star. Make a wish! You make a Hollywood minute omelet and crack some eggs.”
In the recent Netflix documentary “Being Eddie,” Murphy explained that he refused to appear on “SNL” for years after the joke aired.
“The joke went through all the channels that a joke has to go through, and then he said, ‘Catch a falling star,’ and it got aired,” Murphy said. “So I didn’t think, ‘Fuck David Spade.’ I thought, ‘Oh, fuck ‘SNL.'” Damn you. How are you going to do this? Do you all think of me that way? Oh, you dirty bastards. So was I. That’s why I didn’t go back for years. ”
Spade added that he and Murphy were reunited at last year’s “SNL 50” celebration and that all sins have been forgiven.
“I’ve met him once or twice, and I met him on the 50th hole and we talked a little bit and everything was fine,” Spade said. “And they asked him about it, and he said, ‘Yeah, we’re all fine.’ So, yes, we’re all fine. ”
