Danny DeVito is enjoying life as a grandfather.
Chatting exclusively with PEOPLE at the 18th Annual GO Gala in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 17, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, 80, said he and his grandson Carmine (whom his eldest daughter Lucy Chet DeVito welcomed in July 2024) are “good friends.”
“I just bought him a bunch of toys. I got him some new books. And I got him some tennis balls,” the actor said of his grandson’s gifts.
“It’s amazing, he loves the ball,” Lucy, 42, added.
When asked how he knew exactly what to buy for his one-year-old, Danny jokingly replied that he just went to the store and looked for “what he wanted.” The actor is also a grandfather through his middle daughter Grace “Gracie” Van DeVito, who gave birth to daughter Sinclair in 2023.
Danny has Lucy and Grace, 40, and son Jake, 38, with ex Rhea Perlman.
Lucy tells PEOPLE that she’s “obsessed” with the Batman Returns actor being her grandfather and that the family finds opportunities to “be together all the time.”
“[We]eat a lot of food and play,” she explains. “Carmine and he are best buddies.”

Danny previously spoke about his joy as a grandfather in a 2024 AARP video. In the clip, he said that his young children have given him a lot of “joy” that fuels his life.
“In two years, each of my daughters has had a baby. Now that this baby is born, you have to mess with me in the joy department,” he said at the time. “I’m just kind of crushed.”
“There’s a saying, ‘A watched pot never boils.’ So I apply that to my kids as well. I watch them all the time because I don’t want them to boil,” he continued. “I want them to grow over time.”

The proud father of three also said growing his family is one of his biggest motivations. “No matter what happens in life, the important thing is that I have family and friends. I’m very lucky. Blessings have showered on me. I hope everyone has blessings,” he added in the clip.

The Matilda star previously recalled how she found out about Lucy and Carmine’s pregnancy while co-starring in the Broadway play I Need That. He told The Talk that Lucy revealed the news during a pre-performance chat “about how we’re going to do this play.”
“One night she sat there and had tea,” he said, noting that they planned to “continue” within 30 minutes.
“She said, ‘Dad, I want to talk to you about something. I’m pregnant,'” Danny recalled. “I burst into tears.”
