Indian filmmaker Devashish Makhija and actor/producer Anshuman Jha have teamed up for a crime noir thriller, marking their first collaboration.
The as-yet-untitled project represents a fusion of two distinctive voices in contemporary Indian cinema. Makhija, whose internationally known filmography includes ‘Joram’, ‘Bhonsle’ and ‘Ajji’, has developed films that are described as high-tension genre works.
Jha from ‘Kurzon Ki Haveli Sir’ has been cast in the lead role. The actor has built his career with various projects such as ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’, ‘Chauranga’, ‘Lakadbaggha’ and ‘No Fathers in Kashmir’. Beyond being an actor, Jha has established himself as a producer with the infrastructure for independent production and theatrical release.
“I hope this film will be something that I will remember even when I die,” Makhija said. “I have been following Anshuman Jha’s journey for years. There is a rare serenity and intensity in him that I feel is perfect for this film we are making together. This character demands restraint, chaos, vulnerability and strength, and I believe Anshuman Jha can bring all of that, sometimes at once.”
Jha expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it his most exciting screenwriting opportunity in 15 years. “Devasish is one of our most fearless and original storytellers. His films are not just to be seen, they are to be experienced. Collaborating with him is both an honor and a challenge, something I had been craving. This script struck me, which is always a sign of yes.”
The film is an India-German-France co-production, with India’s First Ray Films serving as the Indian production company. Makhija and Jha were recently present at the WAVES Film Bazaar to finalize the details of the film’s structure.
WAVES Film Bazaar is a part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) market in Goa.
