RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Ingrid Guimarães, one of Brazil’s most popular comedic actors, is pivoting from hit comedy to drama with “Minha Criança Trans?” (Literally translated as “My trans child?”). The project is currently in development and production is expected to begin in 2027. Guilherme Coelho and Mariana Ferraz will produce alongside Guimarães for Matizar Films.
Vitrine Films, the leading independent distributor of The Secret Agent, will handle distribution in Brazil and will co-invest in the development of the project.
Guimarães has long been widely traded in the South American country, holding the record for the biggest domestic box office gross of the decade for just over 23 million reais (US$4.2 million). The actor, who started his career on television, successfully made the transition to the big screen with hits such as the “Head Over Heels” series and “Boyfriend for Wife.” She is currently promoting her Amazon set “Perrengue Fashion” which just launched in Brazil.
“Is Minha Crianza Trans?” The film will be written by Tamiris Nunez, based on her own experience raising a transgender child. After struggling to find adequate legal and social support, Nunez founded an NGO of the same name to help families facing similar challenges while raising transgender children. In a blend of personal memoir and social reflection, Nunez shares her experience as a mother learning that her child is transgender, and tells the story of a powerful journey of acceptance, learning, and family transformation.
The film marks a significant turning point in Guimarães’ career, marking her first starring role in a drama after more than a decade of hit comedy roles. In an interview with Variety, the star said the story is a “powerful reminder that love transcends labels.” “Bringing this work to the screen is both an artistic challenge and a very personal mission. This is my first on-screen drama, inspired by something so true, like the story of Tamiris.”
“This film offers a fresh and courageous cinematic perspective on gender identity and family, and promises to strengthen Brazil’s growing commitment to telling important stories,” she added.
Vitrine Filmes director Leticia Friedrich says the company is proud to be “developing films that spark important conversations in Brazil and beyond.” “At Vitrine Films, we believe in the power of film to evoke empathy and drive social change. ‘Miña Crianza? Trans?’ is a deeply moving story that cuts to the heart of modern society. We look forward to sharing this work with audiences around the world. ”
Mattisard Film’s Coelho said it was an “honour” to produce director Guimarães’ groundbreaking feature debut. “She will move audiences as a mother who must reinvent herself out of love,” added Ferraz. “This film explores motherhood, listening, and acceptance with delicacy and strength, taking viewers on an intimate and transformative journey. We are thrilled to witness the encounter between a beloved actress and a story that requires both delicacy and courage.”
