Emmy Award winner and Oscar and Tony Award nominee Colman Domingo will be presented with the President’s Award at this year’s NAACP Image Awards.
Domingo, who won an Emmy for HBO’s “Euphoria” and will play Joe Jackson in the upcoming Lionsgate film “Michael,” among a number of high-profile projects, will be presented with the President’s Award at the 57th annual ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 28. Deon Cole returns to host the show, which will be broadcast live on BET and CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The Presidential Award is presented as a “recognition of extraordinary achievement and outstanding public service,” and Domingo specifically paid tribute to “the breadth and depth of his leadership, artistry, and cultural impact.” Previous winners include Usher, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwyane Wade, Rihanna, LeBron James, Kerry Washington, Spike Lee, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Sean Jay Z. Carter and Lauryn Hill. Last year, Dave Chappelle won the award.
This special honor comes during a busy year for Domingo, reprising his role in Season 3 of the Emmy Award-winning Euphoria, which will premiere on HBO this April. He will also appear in Season 2 of Netflix’s The Four Seasons. On the big screen, after Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael,” she will play key roles in Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” which will be released in July, and Jaume Collet-Serra’s Netflix thriller “An Innocent Girl.”
“Through film, television and theater, Coleman has consistently chosen works that challenge storytelling, expand representation and center humanity with dignity and grace,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. “He is not only exemplary in his craft, but intentional in how he uses his platform to uplift stories that might not otherwise be heard. As an artist, he leads with integrity, fearlessness, and a deep commitment to his community, and is a model of what it means to build a legacy that extends far beyond stage and screen.”
This year, Domingo was also nominated for two NAACP Image Awards for his role and direction in The Four Seasons and as part of the ensemble cast in Wicked: For Good. He has already won four Image Awards, including a double win in 2024 for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for Rustin and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for The Color Purple.
“Colman Domingo is a symbol of the creativity that unites people and moves cultures forward,” added BET Chairman Louis Carr. “At BET, our commitment has always been to community, culture and connection, and Coleman’s influence reflects those values in action. His influence is so meaningful as he honors the stories and legacy that preceded us while inspiring future generations. We are proud to celebrate his extraordinary contributions and recognize the lasting impact of his vision and unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Other special honorees at this year’s NAACP Image Awards Week include Viola Davis, who will receive the President’s Award during the telecast. A$AP Rocky, winner of the Vanguard Award for Fashion, presented at the annual fashion show on Friday, February 27th. The Rev.
