The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli told The Independent that if the HBO crime drama were made today, the characters would “probably” be Donald Trump supporters.
“This show is about the American Dream, especially through the eyes of immigrants,” Imperioli said. “If it were made now, that would be one of the big themes. It’s the current climate in the United States and what they’re doing with immigrants. In fact, all the characters are immigrants, but oddly enough, I think a lot of them are probably Trump supporters. So how do you reconcile those things? When the Italians came, and people forget this or don’t want to see this, a lot of them were undocumented.”
Imperioli played Christopher Moltisanti in all 86 episodes of The Sopranos, which aired for six seasons on HBO from 1999 to 2007. Widely regarded as one of the greatest TV dramas of all time, the show won 21 Emmy Awards during its run, including three Best Actor wins for the late James Gandolfini. Imperioli was nominated for four Emmy Awards and won once for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama.
“The Sopranos” creator David Chase told the New York Times in 2019 that he didn’t think Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano would be attracted to Trump.
“He would have thought the guy was full of (expletive),” he said. “I don’t know if Tony thought he was a good president or not, as anyone who has been in office would have thought about that question. But I do know that Tony would have thought that Trump was a penny aunt in terms of his lies and his presentation.”
