Diane Keaton’s famous friends took to social media to mourn the 79-year-old’s death.

The iconic actress died in California, a family spokesperson told People magazine on Saturday. The cause of death is unknown.

Keaton’s The First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler called the news “unbearably sad” in an Instagram post.

“The brilliant, beautiful and extraordinary Diane Keaton has passed away. Words cannot express how incredibly sad this is,” Midler wrote.

“She was hilarious, totally original, and had none of the malice or competitiveness you would expect from a star like that. What you saw was who she was…Oh, la, lala!” she continued.

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played Keaton’s daughter in Father of the Bride and its sequel, shared a screenshot of the two from the previous film.

“Diane, working with you has always been one of the highlights of my life,” she wrote. “You are one of a kind and I was thrilled to be in your orbit for a while. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, talent, and most of all your laughter. 🙏🏻🕊️💔❤️❤️❤️”

Piers Morgan hailed Keaton as one of “Hollywood’s greatest actresses”.

“Rest in peace Diane Keaton, 79. Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall, star of The Godfather and Father of the Bride, one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses and a delightful woman. Sad news,” wrote a post on X.

Rosie O’Donnell wrote on Instagram: “Oh this breaks my heart – her love for her children – what style, what grace – I will miss her so much #ripdianekeaton 😥💔.”

Melissa Gilbert also wrote a lengthy message on Instagram expressing her sadness and saying Keaton was her idol.

“It is incredible to me that such an energetic and vibrant person will be gone,” she wrote. “I know she will live on through her extraordinary work and, most importantly, through her beloved children… But to imagine a world without her here… seems impossible.”

“I loved everything about her,” she continued. “Her versatility and dexterity as an actor. Her sure style. Her independence. Her humor. Her smile. Her very being.”

Amy Sedaris wrote, “Heartbreaking💔💔True original. Artist. Beautiful. Spirit of the sky💫💫💫.”

Cynthia Nixon also posted a tribute, writing, “When I was a kid, Diane Keaton was my absolute idol. I loved her acting. I loved her vibe. I loved everything about her. Since I was 12 years old, I loved her. I tried to dress like a woman. I wore men’s hats and vests, and I wore book-like glasses (though my eyes were fine) because I thought she looked more like her. Just a little bit.” Ten years ago, I got to work with her in a movie called “Five Flights Up,” and it felt like a dream come true. I was very shy around her, but I think she liked me, and that meant everything to me. ”

“If you want to know more about Diane Keaton, look at Annie Hall, Reds, Shoot the Moon. She’s extraordinary in those,” she continued. “But also read her stunningly honest autobiography, ‘Then Again,’ which not only tells her own story but also fascinatingly contrasts it with her mother’s life. She was one of a kind, and we are so sad to see her go.”
