He won’t be walking down the aisle any time soon.
Cam Newton, who has nine children with three different women, has explained why he doesn’t think marriage is for him.
“I want to be around people who want to be around me,” the former NFL star said on a recent podcast appearance on “TalkLesShow.” “So if there’s five[women]if there’s six, if there’s one. I like volunteering. I don’t like hostages.”
When I asked Newton if getting married means holding someone “hostage,” he reiterated, “I don’t think so. I like volunteering, not hostages. I want people around me who want to be around me, and I want them to be around me.”
The former Carolina Panthers star, who has been dating comedian Jasmine Brown since 2021, also noted that he would be a “hostage” in their marriage.
“I just want you to be happy. And if I’m the one that makes you happy, you can get married without any commitment. And you don’t have to get married to get a commitment,” he shared.
Newton later said she would be “okay” without getting married “as long as I have a life partner.”
“People always try weird things to figure it out,” he said of having a long-term partner with no commitment to marriage.
He also defended his beliefs, saying giving a woman an engagement ring or wedding ring turns a marriage into a “gift competition.”
“Listen and play this, because most women say, ‘I just want a ring, I just want a ring, I just want a ring.'” Now, why? “Blame marriage, ‘blame marriage’… Look where the ring is in the Bible,” he said.
“I’m not going to bully you into giving you a gift because that sounds like cornering the cat.”
Newton recently gave birth to her ninth child, her second child with Brown, also 36, in October 2025.
The couple also has a daughter, born in March 2024.
The former quarterback is the older of seven, two of whom he adopted, and also has children with ex-girlfriends Kia Proctor and La Reina Shaw.
