Caleb Williams has no time for hate.
The Chicago Bears quarterback recently addressed his painted nails on an episode of “The Rush with Maxx Crosby,” saying he “doesn’t care” what critics think.
“You know, people have certain feelings about masculine sports, but to be honest, I don’t care. I couldn’t care less,” the athlete said on the podcast.
“And I’m going to keep doing it, and it’s unique to me and it’s a cool way to embrace certain things and show love to certain things…so that’s why I do it.”
Williams said her mother is a manicurist and her interest in manicures “came from” watching her work.
But he didn’t think about painting his nails until he went on a date with his ex-girlfriend.
“One day I was at a nail salon with one of my ex-girlfriends, and she said, ‘Why don’t you try[yours]?'” he recalled.
“I was like, ‘Fuck.’ I know who I am and what I like. So I did it. So I ended up with three nails, four nails, five nails, six nails…I ended up just doing it.”
At first, Williams used decorated numbers to infuriate opposing teams, writing messages like “F—k Texas” on his nails.
“I enjoy trolling. I do it. I have to be careful now…but I do it sometimes,” he said. “And I try to do it smartly.”
But it quickly became a way to raise awareness for a cause he cared about.
“I’ve been doing suicide prevention work and breast cancer awareness,” he said. “It’s like wearing pink shoes and a pink headband. You’re just putting gel on your nails!”
