Britney Spears’ ex-husband Jason Alexander fiercely defended the singer on Instagram shortly after she was arrested for drunk driving.
The 44-year-old, who married Spears for 55 hours after their 2004 wedding in Sin City, called on social media users to “slow down and discuss” Spears’ detention.
“If reports that she blew a .06 are accurate, that would be below the legal (blood alcohol content) limit in most states,” he wrote, citing California’s 0.08 percent limit.
TMZ claimed that Spears, also 44, told people that a blood draw showed her BAC was 0.06 percent, but she could still face a DUI charge if she was unsteady behind the wheel.
Alexander continued: “If the only substances in her system were legally prescribed drugs, that would be a completely different story. What is being discussed now could be a misdemeanor at best, such as reckless driving or simple possession if the substance is found in the vehicle.”
A childhood friend of Ms. Spears shared her concerns that the story surrounding Ms. Spears’ law-breaking was “spiraling out of control.”
“Rumors spread faster than facts, and suddenly someone is being judged before the truth is known. Britney Spears deserves what everyone else deserves: facts, fairness, and due process.”
Alexander asked his followers to “get the facts straight”.
He reposted the same statement on his Stories, advising Spears to “seriously rethink[her]entire management team, step away from the Hollywood circus, and focus on what really matters.”
Alexander urged his ex-girlfriend to seek “peace, privacy, and God,” adding, “Sometimes the healthiest thing to do is to step away from the hustle and bustle, sell your house, leave California, and distance yourself from the people who profit from the chaos.”
Spears’ representatives did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
The songwriter’s manager, Cade Hudson, told Page Six in a statement Wednesday that Spears’ actions were “totally unacceptable” and that he hopes her arrest is “the first step toward long-overdue change.”
“Britney intends to take the right steps and abide by the law. … I hope she gets the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” he wrote.
The “Crossroads” star was taken into custody in Ventura County, California, after “weaving in and out” of lanes, according to a 911 call, and the California Highway Patrol told Page Six Spears that he was believed to be under the influence of a cocktail of drugs and alcohol.
She was released from the Ventura County Jail on Thursday morning and has a court date scheduled for May 4.
Spears’ other two ex-husbands, Kevin Federline and Sam Asghari, have not publicly responded to her arrest.
