Britney Spears was caught with an unknown substance in her car before her shocking DUI arrest.
A source close to the embattled pop star confirmed to Page Six that an unknown substance was found inside Spears’ BMW shortly before she was taken into custody Wednesday night.
However, it is currently unknown what this mysterious substance was, and it has since been sent to a laboratory for testing.
TMZ was first to report the news.
Spears, 44, was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence after she was spotted swerving in and out of a BMW in Westlake Village, California.
Page Six confirmed that the “Toxic” singer was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County at approximately 9:28 p.m. local time and arrested at 3:02 a.m.
She was also reportedly released from police custody at 6:07 a.m. Thursday after authorities took her to a hospital to draw blood to determine her blood alcohol content.
A trial date is scheduled for May 4.
Spears was said to be “crying and very tearful” during her DUI arrest.
“She was incredibly emotional,” a source exclusively shared with Page Six. “The last few months have been very difficult.”
The source added that Spears feels “embarrassed and ashamed” about the incident and is “very sorry.”
“She doesn’t want to disappoint anyone, including her fans,” the source said. “The last thing she wants is to be judged in public again.”
“Oops! I Did It Again” hitmaker Cade Hudson said in a statement to Page Six that Spears’ DUI arrest was “a completely unacceptable and unfortunate incident.”
“Britney intends to take the right steps and abide by the law. We hope this is the first step in the long-awaited changes that should occur in Britney’s life,” he said. “I hope she gets the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
Hudson added that Spears’ sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, “will be spending time” with the Grammy winner after her arrest, and that Spears’ “loved ones will come up with the much-needed plans to help her succeed in her well-being.”
Another source claimed that Kevin Federline’s memoir, “You Thought You Knew,” published in October 2025, was responsible for the “downhill” spiral that led to the “Womanizer” singer’s DUI arrest.
“But the truth is this has been going on for a while,” a source close to the pop star told Page Six on Thursday. “In recent months, her behavior has become increasingly erratic. She has gone from energetic to lethargic.”
They continued, “It was Kevin’s book that really pushed her, and it was all downhill from there. It had a big impact on her emotionally.”
The source added that Spears “felt like she gave Kevin everything he wanted over the years” and “paid a lot of money” for him, but he still “exploited her” in his memoir.
“He used her. He wanted to destroy her,” they said. “And that was a really hard pill to swallow. She definitely died that someone would try to do this much damage to her.”
Spears was said to have been enjoying some alone time for several hours before being arrested for drunk driving.
“She was alone. She was home and just wanted to go for a drive,” another source said of the “Stronger” singer.
Spears also claimed to have told officers that she had only had one mimosa in the afternoon.
“That was a mistake,” an insider explained to Page Six. “She didn’t think she was under the influence of anything.”
