Bowen Yang believes the “Wicked” series has reached the end of the yellow brick road. When the “Wicked” actor and “Saturday Night Live” star was asked about the possibility of a third “Wicked” movie being greenlit, Yang offered an answer in which he seemed satisfied with the way “Wicked: For Good” ended things.
“We’re going to keep it that way,” Yang told Variety’s Marc Malkin on Lexus’ Variety on the Carpet before discussing a possible spinoff. “Me and Bronwyn James’ characters (Fanny and Shen Sheng) are going to pitch the story of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.”
“Wicked: For Good,” which follows last year’s “Wicked,” is an adaptation of the second (and final) act of the Broadway musical. As of now, there is no expectation of a third installment in the “Wicked” universe, with the two-part story ending at the end of the stage show. Series director Jon M. Chu was tentative when asked about the possibility of a third Wicked movie.
“What do you mean?” said Mr. Chu. “You know, there’s a lot of ideas floating around right now. … I understand that. Let’s just enjoy the ride.”
Yang also expressed excitement that her “Wicked” co-star Ariana Grande will be returning to “Saturday Night Live” to host in December, and that Cher will be joining as a musical guest.
“I can’t wait. I’m so happy for her,” Yang said of Cher, calling her a “dream host.” “Ariana definitely does a good Cher impression. She did a ‘Christopher Walken Reunion’ (sketch) where everyone had a Cher impression. Around Christmas time, we’re going to promote ‘Cher Family Reunion,’ where everyone has a Cher impression.”
Cynthia Erivo and Grande appeared on the carpet at the premiere in New York City, but neither was available for interviews. A representative for Universal contacted the media Monday morning to say that Erivo was “not feeling well and has lost her voice.” Grande skipped the interview in solidarity with her co-stars.
In addition to Erivo and Grande, her Wicked co-stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum attended the New York premiere.
“Wicked: For Good” opens in theaters on Friday.
