Netflix has released the main trailer for the new Korean romantic comedy series “Boyfriend on Demand,” starring BLACKPINK’s Jisoo and a star-studded cast.
Jisoo plays Mi-rae, a webtoon producer who is exhausted by her daily busy schedule and escapes into a subscription-based virtual dating simulation program that promises her a dream date. The series takes its title from the in-story service itself, which offers custom-made fantasy scenarios tailored to each user’s ideal type. Set against the backdrop of office life, the show uses the concept of virtual boyfriends to explore the gap between perfect fantasies and imperfect reality.
The trailer gives us a closer look at the series’ central blend of everyday life and romantic escapism. While Mi-rae gets involved in one date after another in the virtual world, in real life she repeatedly crosses paths with Kyung-nam, played by Seo In-guk, and the two gradually become “overtime buddies.” A slow-moving relationship between the two builds parallel to her virtual adventures, hinting at a more grounded romance and complicating her ideas about the perfect match.
“Boyfriend on Demand” will be directed by Kim Jong-sik, who has previously directed works such as “Work Later, Drink Now” and “No Gain No Love,” and written by Namgoong Do-young.
Director Kim Jong-sik said, “One of the most appealing aspects of “Boyfriend on Demand” is that the main character experiences various romantic relationships with various people in various settings and worldviews in one series. As a result, viewers can enjoy a wide range of romantic comedies.”
Regarding the virtual date scene, he added, “We focused most on expressing Jisoo’s many charms in the most versatile way possible. To that end, we used various occupations and made subtle changes to her character in the virtual world, making her acting style feel different from Mi-rae in real life.”
The series features a lineup of virtual boyfriends with special appearances by Seo Kang-joon, Lee Soo-hyuk, Ong Sung-woo, Lee Jae-wook, Lee Hyun-wook, Jay Park, Kim Yong-dae, and Lee Sang-yi, each of whom bring a different flavor of romance to Mi-rae’s pseudo-love life. Hayoung and Yoo In-na round out the cast.
The series, which will premiere on March 6, is produced by Whynot Media, Baram Pictures and Kakao Entertainment.
