Grabber returns on January 16th as “Black Phone 2” becomes available to stream on Peacock.
Blumhouse’s 2021 Scott Derrickson-directed horror sequel was released in theaters last October. In addition to Derrickson’s return to the director’s chair, the film also follows Ethan Hawke’s revenge against the villain Glover, who haunts protagonists Finny and Gwen Blake (Mason Thames and Madeline McGraw) from beyond the grave.
The sequel also saw the return of Miguel Mora and Jeremy Davis from the original film’s cast, and original characters Ariana Rivas, Demian Bichir, Maev Beatty, Graham Abbey, and Anna Lore. The script was written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill and focuses on Finny and Gwen dealing with trauma while trying to solve the mystery of telekinesis, set four years after the events of the previous film. Meanwhile, Glover returns as a deadly and terrifying ghost, seeking revenge for the fate he suffered at their hands at the end of the first film.
“Black Phone 2” premiered at Fantastic Fest in September and grossed more than $125 million worldwide, making it a success after a slow October. However, the sequel’s box office gross was less than the original “Black Phone,” which made $161 million in 2021.
“The Black Phone” is based on a short story of the same name that was published in Joe Hill’s 2005 anthology “20th Century Ghosts.” Hill also contributed to the story of “Black Phone 2.”
Jason Blum co-produced both films with Derrickson and Cargill. Both were released by Universal Pictures.
