Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Berkshire International Film Festival (BIFF), the Mission of the European Union to the United States has selected BIFF as the first U.S. film festival partner for the newly launched Transatlantic Rising Stars Project. The initiative “aims to deepen cultural ties and foster creative cooperation between the EU and the United States.”

On Tuesday, it opened its first call for EU film directors to apply for the 2026 edition. The 20th Annual BIFF Festival will be held from May 28th to May 31st, 2026 in the Berkshires, Massachusetts.

During BIFF’s 20th anniversary celebrations, selected directors will participate in the festival’s Filmmaker Summit and present their work in the dedicated European Filmmaker Showcase.

Funded by the European Union, the Transatlantic Rising Stars Project supports artists in film, visual arts, and music through immersive on-site experiences in the United States. Starting in 2026, selected EU filmmakers will embark on a fully funded two-week exploration of the American film world from mid-May to early June.

“As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, BIFF is confidently stepping into its next chapter. Our partnership with the Transatlantic Rising Stars Project will not only elevate new voices, but also strengthen the Berkshires as a vibrant crossroads of global storytelling. We are honored to help open new doors for creative talent as we celebrate a milestone year for the festival.” Kelly Vickery, Founder and Artistic Director of BIFF, said:

EU Ambassador to the United States Jovita Neriupsiene said: “This program is a landmark moment. For the first time, the EU has created a program aimed at bringing European artists to the United States.” “American and European artists will collaborate to create new works that connect with local communities, from Alaska to Massachusetts. We hope this program not only advances the artists’ careers, but also creates lasting friendships and networks that help people in the United States and Europe better understand each other.”

The application period is from December 2, 2025 to January 16, 2026. The application portal is available on the website of the Delegation of the EU to the United States.
