A feature film about the bowler hat-wearing British children’s character Mr. Ben, who first appeared in a series of books and then became the star of a popular animated TV series, appears to be moving forward after years of discussion.
Kirk Jones, who recently directed the hit indie film I Swear, which won both Best Actor and Best Casting from five BAFTA nominations, is set to write and direct the live-action adaptation of the Mr. Ben series, which is being announced by 48 Films, Beagle Pug, Jackpot Productions and One Story High.
Casting for lead actor Ben and supporting roles is expected to begin later this year, with production expected to begin next year.
Mr Ben is based on the classic animated series created by David Mackie and first broadcast on the BBC in 1971. In this series, Mr. Ben is an ordinary man who goes on extraordinary adventures every time he visits a magical costume shop. Although only 13 episodes were ever produced, the series was so popular that it was regularly rebroadcast, became one of the most fondly remembered British TV shows, and was often ranked among the best children’s shows of all time in audience polls.
“I idolized Mr. Ben as a child and quickly realized the importance of introducing him to a new generation in a live-action adventure,” Jones said. Mr. Jones’ other credits include “Nanny McPhee” and “Waking Ned Divine.” “Mr. Ben finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and future worlds, and solving apparently monumental problems with kindness, compassion, and common sense. Following The Vow, I would like to work on projects that are humorous and entertaining, while at the same time helping us focus on what is important in a world full of distractions. If all goes to plan, Mr. Ben may even be able to save the world.”
added the McKee family. “The Mr. Ben movie project has been in our hearts for many years. It’s something my dad has often talked about and he was eager to see it happen. Over time, momentum has built and the pieces have slowly come together. We’re really excited to have Kirk Jones on board to help steer the project in the right direction, and we’re really excited to be returning to Festive Road, where we grew up.”
Mr. Benn is produced by Branwen Prestwood-Smith (The Mauritanian) and Mike Prestwood-Smith for 48 Films, David Barron (Harry Potter series) for BeaglePug Ltd, Jack Whitehall (Bad Education) for Jackpot Productions and Jones for One Story High.
