Bad Bunny is finally breaking down his Super Bowl halftime performance look.
The singer took to the stage Sunday night as a performer at the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show wearing a custom white ZARA look with plenty of hidden symbolism.
He wore a blazer for part of the show, but spent most of the show wearing a custom cropped jersey with the name “Ocasio” and the number 64 on the front and back.
Speculation about the meaning of the number quickly arose, with NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy sharing on social media, “Bad Bunny wore number 64 to honor his uncle who played football.”
That’s partially true, but Bad Bunny himself revealed a sentimental nod in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“1964 is the year my Tio Cutito was born. He is my mother’s brother. Everything I know about the NFL is because of him,” he said.
“When he was 17 years old, he went to work in the United States and never went back to Puerto Rico. But he always came and spent time with us in late January or early February, because that was the peak of the NFL postseason. “He was a big fan of the San Francisco 49ers, and their home stadium is the site of this year’s Super Bowl,” he said, linking not only his attire but also the location of the game to his late uncle. A person who died two years ago.
He continued, “I always dreamed of taking my uncle to the Super Bowl one year, but I couldn’t do it. His death was sudden and sudden, without warning. So I decided to take my uncle on my shirt when I performed at the Super Bowl. OCASIO, his last name was the same as my mother’s, and his birth year was ’64.”
Bad Bunny concluded by saying that he dedicated his performance to his uncle before taking the field, knowing that his uncle was there and “proud of his nephew.”
The entire show was a tribute to Puerto Rico, celebrating the commonwealth’s rich culture through dance, food, agricultural expressions, and more.
They sang favorites such as “Tití Me Preguntó,” “Yo Perreo Sola” and “DtMF,” and were joined by celebrity friends such as Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba and Cardi B, as well as singers Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.
