High School Musical premiered on Disney Channel on January 20, 2006 and became an overnight success, becoming the channel’s most commercially successful original film, drawing 7.7 million viewers in its premiere. The film’s soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard 200 and remained on the list for over 100 weeks.
The film’s iconic dance numbers were choreographed by Kenny Ortega, and the film centers on basketball star Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and academically gifted freshman Gabriela Montez (Vanessa Hudgens). The two meet for the first time at karaoke on New Year’s Eve, and are reunited when Gabriella unexpectedly transfers to East High School. Then, the drama and athletic clubs are shaken up by an unlikely duo’s audition for a musical.
Sequels followed in 2007 and 2008. Tisdale-French also starred in the 2011 spinoff Sharpay’s Excellent Adventure, and Disney+ is home to High School Musical: The Movie: The Series, which aired from 2019 to 2023.
