Ariana Grande has done it again.
In a nod to the original on-screen Glinda, played by Billy Burke in 1939, Grande wore an intricately embellished pink long-sleeve haute couture dress sourced from the storied Givenchy archives.
Grande has had many historically significant fashion moments with the help of her stylist Law Roach, but perhaps few are as iconic as this one.
Not only was this pink dress pulled from the Givenchy archives, but it was also the last dress to walk the runway at Hubert de Givenchy’s final show.
In December 1995, Givenchy took a final bow arm-in-arm with model Angelica Vos during its fall couture show.
The gown features a simple Givenchy signature silhouette with a slightly cinched waist and flowing gathered skirt. It has long, slightly puffy sleeves and a dramatic scooped neckline.
The pink silk is covered with intricately placed ribbons, giving the gown an interesting physical texture.
On the runway, Boss wore an oversized pink satin ribbon in her hair that cascaded down her back and was studded with pink roses that matched her bouquet.
Grande chose to wear her hair in a ballet bun, but she also accessorized her all-back look with pink flowers.
In addition to a slideshow of images that included original Givenchy sketches, Law posted a video of the 1995 haute couture show and a still photo of Grande wearing the dress today.
In the caption, the image architect wrote: “Ali is wearing the final look from Mr. Hubert Givenchy’s last haute couture collection FW/1995. Thank you to the team @givenchy and a special thank you to Sarah Burton for granting us access to the archives 💕💕💕.”
During the “Wicked: For Good” press tour, Grande made great use of her fashion archives from around the world.
Lately, the singer has been wearing voluminous gowns and sophisticated caped dresses created by “Wizard of Oz” costume director Gilbert Adrian. On the NBC Wicked concert special, she appeared wearing a glittering vintage Bob Mackie look. She also chose a vintage 1950 design without a label when presenting in Paris earlier this month.
The “Wicked: For Good” press tour may be coming to a close, but it feels like Grande’s celebration of vintage and historical fashion is just getting started.
