Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Idina Menzel, and Kristin Chenoweth have all changed each other forever.
The quartet finally teamed up to harmonize on “For Good,” one of Wicked’s emotionally pivotal musical numbers. Menzel, 54, and Chenoweth, 57, famously originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the 2003 Broadway production of Wicked. Erivo, 38, and Grande, 32, are currently playing their roles in the Wicked movies, but Menzel and Chenoweth surprised them with a scene set in the Emerald City in the first film.
The performance took place during NBC’s Wicked special “One Wonderful Night,” which aired on Thursday, November 6th at 8pm ET. The special will be available to watch on Peacock starting Friday, November 7th.
According to the official synopsis, the special was largely filmed at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, which has been transformed into a “breathtaking Emerald City-inspired set featuring a 37-piece live orchestra led by award-winning music director Stephen Oremus, plus stunning musical numbers and unforgettable performances.”
Grande’s opening number, seen in an exclusive PEOPLE preview, was a new arrangement of the musical’s first song, “No One Morns the Wicked.” The Grammy winner, dressed in a shimmering champagne-colored dress, was backed by a choir backed by an army of backup dancers and a live orchestra. The audience also joined in, with the crowd holding bouquets of flowers over their heads as Grande hit high notes.
Erivo’s exclusive PEOPLE clip was an excerpt from the final part of her dazzling Wicked solo, “The Wizard and I.” In a menswear-inspired look, illuminated in green, of course, the British star enthuses about Elphaba’s desire to meet the Wizard of Oz, as emerald-clad dancers gyrate from the stage.

The music for Wicked was composed by Stephen Schwartz, and the popular musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The story depicts the strong friendship that develops between Shiz University roommates Elphaba Throp (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda Upland (later known as Glinda the Good). The character originally appeared in L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good will be released in theaters on November 21st.
