Is Jack Black the new Margot Robbie? Not completely.
During the 2023 Barbie press tour, the Australian beauty was so intent on imitating Barbie that her red carpet looks ended up in a coffee table book. She continued to push the envelope with her sultry Wuthering Heights masterpiece earlier this year, covering herself in hundreds of carats of diamonds and fake hair.
Zendaya has also been dominating premieres around the world, working with stylist Law Roach to create epic looks that follow the themes of Dune, Challengers, and now The Drama.
But the stars of Super Mario Galaxy Movie are taking a completely different approach.
The cast celebrated the release of the animated film at a photocall in Tokyo on Thursday, wearing blindingly colorful costumes. There was also Jack Black channeling the character in his Spirit Halloween Bowser costume, and Keegan-Michael Key wearing a suit emblazoned with “Super Mario Bros.” The character — and wears a polka-dot hat just to remind you of his connection to the Mushroom People.
Benny Safdie (as Bowser Jr.), Charlie Day (as Luigi), and Donald Glover (as Yoshi) all wore more modest looks — the film’s star, Chris Pratt, wore a gray suit with bright red sneakers from Mario-adjacent Adidas — while Anya Taylor-Joy gave Princess Peach a high-fashion look.
The “Furiosa” actress opted for a custom Jacquemus three-piece look that included an abs-baring bandeau top, a dramatic pencil skirt, and, of course, an oversized hat, all peach-colored.
Taylor-Joy is a darling of the fashion industry and is no stranger to dressing herself. While promoting the Mad Max prequel, she wore a bold, futuristic look that featured frayed edges and edgy lace-up details.
She wore a minidress made entirely of metal to the film’s May 2024 premiere, and later sported an apocalyptic-chic haute couture dress and a matching headpiece covered in spears.
For a special screening of the original “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” she wore a pink leather jumpsuit, paired with thigh-high boots and gloves, in a fighting stance. Naturally, the look was custom Dior.
At the same event in 2023, Jack Black paid a (slightly) more subtle tribute to Bowser, rocking a flame-trimmed suit with a spiked shell on his back in Koopa’s Hymn to the King.
With press for the video game movie already buzzing after Taylor-Joy was asked to compare Princess Peach to Joni Mitchell, expect more flashy fashion to come.
