Anthony Hopkins has revealed that his wife believes he may be on the autism spectrum, but he thinks it’s all “nonsense”.
The Silence of the Lambs actor, 87, told The Sunday Times on November 2 that his wife of 22 years, Stella Arroyave, suspects he falls on the spectrum because he is “obsessed with numbers” and “obsessed with details.”
She added: “I like to do things in order. And I like to memorize things. Stella looked it up and she said, ‘You must have Asperger’s.'” I had no idea what the hell she was saying. I can’t believe it either. ”
According to WebMD, Asperger syndrome is a term that is no longer used to describe the developmental disorder that is part of autism spectrum disorders. People with this type of ASD tend to have difficulty interacting with others socially, stick to very specific routines, and may have a narrow range of interests.
When it was pointed out to him that “a diagnosis of neurobifurcation in later life (…) often brings a great sense of relief,” Hopkins said, “Well, I guess I’m cynical because it’s all nonsense. It’s all nonsense. ADHD, OCD, Asperger’s, blah, blah, blah.”
“Oh, God, I say live it. It’s just being human, full of tangled webs and mysteries and what’s inside us. Full of warts and dirt and madness, that’s the human condition. All these labels. I mean, who cares? But now it’s fashion.”
“Oh, give me a break,” he concluded with a roll of his eyes.
Afterwards, the “Hannibal” actor said he might rather feel “some kind of embarrassment” about his work as an actor.
“No, I’ve never had a job in my life. When I look back on my life, the reality is I’ve never had a proper job in my life. I’ve never done anything other than come on set, say my lines, and go home,” he said.
“People out there are digging roads, working in shops and shops. That’s real work. I’m not digging roads. I’m not doing anything. I look at[myself]and think, ‘I haven’t worked a day in my life.'” That’s the reality. ”
However, the world may be different as he is considered one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors.
Hopkins has won numerous awards throughout his career, including two Academy Awards, four BAFTAs, two Emmy Awards, and one Olivier Award. He also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2005 and the BAFTA Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement in 2008.
In 1993, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
Hopkins’ comments come after he opened up about the terrifying incident that led him to admit he was an alcoholic.
In his upcoming memoir, “We Did OK, Kid,” the “Red Dragon” star writes about driving from Arizona to Beverly Hills in 1975, drunk and without power.
“I could have killed someone,” he wrote. “We could have taken the whole family out.”
On that day, December 29, 1975, he lost all “desire to drink” and began attending Alcoholics Anonymous.
“We Did OK, Kid” opens tomorrow.
