Anne Hathaway, Elizabeth Hurley, Tom Ford, Anna Wintour and Donatella Versace were among the world’s biggest names in film and fashion who attended Friday’s funeral for beloved designer Valentino Garavani, who died at the age of 93 on Monday at his mansion in Rome.
Valentino, known as the iconic fashion mogul, played himself alongside Hathaway in the 2006 hit film The Devil Wears Prada, and Hathaway traveled to Rome with husband Adam Shulman to pay her final respects. The funeral was held in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli dei Martiri in central Rome. Hurley attended with his son Damian Hurley.
Models Claudia Schiffer and Natalia Vodianova and veteran British fashion journalist Susie Menkes were also in Rome to pay tribute to the legend known for his Valentino Red dresses, which dressed some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Also in attendance at the award ceremony were Alessandro Michele, currently Valentino’s creative director, and Pierpaolo Piccioli, who led the Valentino brand from 2008 to 2024. After his retirement in January 2008, director Matt Tyrnauer’s feature-length documentary about Valentino’s career and life, Valentino: The Last Emperor, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
Over the past few days, thousands of mourners have lined up to pay tribute to the “last emperor” at the Valentino Foundation headquarters in Rome, where his coffin was adorned with a single red rose surrounded by white flowers.
Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, hailed Valentino as one of “Italy’s most brilliant and beloved figures,” and tributes poured in from Sophia Loren, Gwyneth Paltrow, Carla Bruni, Cindy Crawford and Colman Domingo, to name a few.
Over the years, Valentino has designed custom wedding dresses for Hathaway, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Courteney Cox, and Nicola Peltz Beckham, and remains a red carpet favorite for stars such as Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Dakota Johnson, and Elle Fanning.
