Andrew Garfield wants to make it clear to comic book movie fans that neither he nor Tobey Maguire will be reprising his role as Spider-Man in Marvel’s upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. Of course, Garfield has repeatedly lied to the press about not appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, so fans won’t believe anything he says on this matter.
While participating in a new GQ video interview, a fan comment asked Garfield, “Will Tobey and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man also appear in Avengers: Doomsday?” The Oscar nominee replied bluntly: “No, unequivocally no.”
Garfield spent all of 2021 denying he would return as the webslinger in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He then appeared opposite Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, helping propel No Way Home to $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.
The actor made his debut as Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, but his tenure as the superhero was cut short after 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed at the box office. The actor told Esquire magazine last year that he was “in limbo” when his role as Spider-Man came to an abrupt end. Coming back with “No Way Home” was a kind of homecoming.
“I thought Toby wouldn’t want to do that. Unfortunately he’s going to act every 10 years and I told him that,” Garfield admitted about his doubts about “No Way Home.” “When I heard he was leaning back a little bit, I thought it was either going to be the best thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I’m so grateful because it was the happiest thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom.”
Garfield added that he would “100% come back (as Spider-Man)” after appearing in No Way Home, adding, “If it’s the right thing to do, if it’s culturally additive, if there’s a great concept or something that’s never been done that’s unique and strange and exciting and immersive. I love the character and it brings me joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I take joy in giving back.”
Holland is currently producing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. There have already been rumors that Garfield might appear as Spider-Man in the film, with Garfield saying earlier this year: “I’m going to disappoint you. Yeah, no. But no one’s going to believe anything I say from now on.”
