American Psycho is one of the most iconic movie titles released in 2000. That may be why several actors were hesitant to step into the role of murderous banker Patrick Bateman.
“I can’t name names, but several big-name actors turned down the role,” American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis said on his podcast, giving an update on the casting process for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film adaptation of the novel. “I think it’s probably because they don’t want to be in Christian Bale’s shoes.”
Based on Ellis’ 1991 novel, Bale originated the role of Bateman more than 25 years ago. Since then, his interpretation of the character has become a pop culture staple, spawning countless Halloween costumes, memes, and commentaries.
Ellis also added that since the project was first announced in 2024, the reimagined American Psycho has gotten an entirely new script written by Scott Z. Burns (and passed on several unnamed actors).
“From what I’ve heard, this movie is completely different from Mary Harron’s 2000 movie. It’s a completely different interpretation and it won’t look anything like that movie,” Ellis said.
Previously rumored candidates for the role of Bateman include Austin Butler (Elvis) and Wuthering Heights star Jacob Elordi.
Harron’s American Psycho, which also starred Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto, and Willem Dafoe, was a commercial success, grossing more than $34 million worldwide on a low budget of $7 million.
Guadagnino’s version of the cult classic will be produced by Frenessy Films for Lionsgate, with Sam Pressman executive producing through his company Pressman Films.
