Peter Friedlander, former head of Netflix script and Canadian television, was hired as head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios. He will be in the role on October 6th.
Friedlander, who left Netflix in August as a streamer nearly 14 years later, succeeded Vernon Sanders, who resigned as a television boss in the beginning of September.
Friendlander first joined Netflix in 2011 as director of the former series team, then rose to Vice President and later became the leader of his division. While there, he directed some of Netflix’s early hits, including “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” and directed current tent poles such as “Wednesday,” “Monsters,” and “Bridgeton.” Previously, Friedlander was an executive at Tom Hanks’ production company Playtone.
News about Friedlander’s employment came in a memo sent to staff by Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Prime Video. Please read the complete notes below.
team,
Welcome Peter Friedlander, who is joining Amazon MGM Studios as the new head of global television. In this role, Peter oversees the original US television portfolio, in addition to global tent pole titles, MGM TV and MGM alternatives. Peter joined us from Netflix and led the script series division for the past four years, first joining the company in 2011. His resume on Netflix has been a Wednesday in which he has worked for Bridgeton, Monster, Ozark, Emily of Paris, Queen Gambit, Agent of the Night, 3 Body Mirror, and he joined Netflix as an employee of the first dedicated original series, helping to shepherd first-generation shows such as House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black.
Prior to Netflix, Peter was a playtone executive for Tom Hanks and Gary Getzman, producing the Emmy-nominated drama series Big Lub and was a creative executive in feature films for many companies. Peter began his career in film sets, including Gold Member Roads and Austin Powers.
You can’t wait for Peter to ramp up and meet all the teams. He knows he is equally ready for the first day, which will be Monday, October 6th. Congratulate him on his new role and welcome him to Amazon.
