Amazon Prime Video has directly ordered the crime thriller series “Calamities” to be made into a series, Variety reported.
The series comes from screenwriter David Weil, who will also serve as showrunner, executive producer, and director under his “Enjoy” production banner. Texas native Glen Powell will also serve as executive producer via Barnstorm.
The show’s logline reads, “After a drug deal turns violent, a sleepy border town is put on a deadly collision course between a small-town sheriff seeking answers from the past, a sociopathic female killer, an overzealous FBI agent, and a ruthless faction of a cartel.”
Natalie Lane Williams will also serve as executive producer on Please Enjoy, and Dan Cohen will serve as executive producer on Barnstorm. Ryan Schwartz will serve as co-executive producer. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
“‘Calamities’ is a thriller full of unique, unblinking characters,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios. “David Weil has created a story that will take your wind away, and we are thrilled to support him, Natalie, Glenn and Dan in bringing it to life with Prime.”
Weil has a long history with Amazon, having previously produced the Nazi hunter series “Hunters” for Prime Video. The show, starring Al Pacino and Logan Lerman, ran for two seasons. Mr. Weil is also a co-creator of Prime Video’s epic spy series “Citadel,” and was an executive producer on the spinoffs “Citadel: Honey Bunny” and “Citadel: Diana.” Similarly, he created the anthology series “Solos” for Prime Video in 2021. His other credits include co-producing “Invasion” on Apple TV.
Powell is currently one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars. He has appeared in blockbuster movies such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Twisters,” and “Anyone But You.” His other film credits include “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Hitman,” “Running Man,” and “How to Make a Killing.” On television, he is currently starring in Hulu’s football comedy “Chad Powers,” and is preparing for season 2.
Weil and Please Enjoy are repped by CAA, Jackoway and Austen Tierman. Mr. Powell and Mr. Bernstrom are represented by CAA, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Cole LLP and Initiative PR.
