Amanda Seyfried has joined the cast of Netflix’s new animated series Steps. Seyfried will be voicing Cinderella.
Directed by Alice Tswe and John Ripa, Seyfried joins Ali Wong (Lilith) and Stephanie Hsu (Margot). A twist on Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters, the film tells the story of Lilith, who is accused of hijacking a royal ball with a stolen magic wand. She accidentally turns her sister Margot into a frog, leaving the kingdom in the hands of a mean girl who is infatuated with the prince. Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella and a surprisingly dreamy troll to save the kingdom, repair the broken fairy tale, and prove that even so-called “villains” can live happily ever after.
Tsue said, “Amanda has an incredible ability to make her characters tangible and relatable, which was absolutely necessary when playing a legendary character like Cinderella. We played a character with flaws and coping mechanisms. We wanted to create a modern heroine, and Amanda immediately understood the challenge. Her portrayal of Cinderella is hilarious, heartbreaking, and most importantly, refreshingly human.”
Ripa added, “Amanda is an absolute joy to work with. She brings a level of experience and passion that inspires us to dig even deeper into this character. Her process of honing her emotions, her command of her voice, all come together to give the classic character of Cinderella depth and humor we never imagined.”
The film is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing, with Poehler and Lessing producing at Paper Kite Productions.
Steps is scheduled for release later this year.
