It’s time to leave the Mushroom Kingdom.

Illumination and Nintendo’s “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” hits theaters April 1, and follows Mario and Luigi on their biggest adventure yet: into space. Inspired by the fan-favorite “Super Mario Galaxy” games, this sequel builds on the huge success of 2023’s “Super Mario Bros. Movie” and expands the world and stakes far beyond anything the brothers have faced before.

Chris Pratt returns as Mario, a Brooklyn plumber turned hero, and co-stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. This time around, new faces have joined the crew, including Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as the celestial princess Rosalina, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., the ambitious heir to the Bowser throne.

The story follows Mario and Luigi on a galaxy-spanning journey as they team up with Peach, Toad, and Yoshi to travel through strange new worlds. They encounter Rosalina and her Lumas, and once again come into conflict with Bowser, who is assisted by his son. Along the way, the film introduces new corners of the Nintendo world, including characters drawn from Nintendo’s rich series. As revealed ahead of the film’s release, Glen Powell is the voice of Fox McCloud in Star Fox and Super Smash Bros. video game.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel, was produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri in collaboration with Nintendo.

Here we introduce the characters and the voices behind them.

Mario (Chris Pratt)

Chris Pratt is the voice of Mario, the main character in the Super Mario series. Mario is an Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom with his twin brother Luigi. Their adventures usually involve rescuing Princess Peach from the villain Bowser. Pratt first came to fame on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation. Some of his best-known roles include Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and starring in the film Guardians of the Galaxy. Pratt also appeared in the “Jurassic World” series and voiced characters in “The Lego Movie” and “The Garfield Movie.”

Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy)

Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach, ruler and head of state of the Mushroom Kingdom. Taylor-Joy’s big break came with her starring role in the horror film The Witch. She then appeared in the horror film “Split” and its sequel “Glass,” followed by a role in “Peaky Blinders,” and the lead role in the 2020 film “Emma.”

Luigi (Charlie Day)

Charlie Day voices the character of Luigi, Mario’s slightly younger twin and kind-hearted but cowardly partner in crime. Day is best known for playing Charlie Kelly in the dark comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, on which he also served as a writer and executive producer. Day has previously appeared in films such as “Pacific Rim,” “Horror Bosses,” and “Fist Fight.” Day has previously worked as a voice actor, voicing characters in Monsters University and The Lego Movie series.

Bowser (Jack Black)

Jack Black provides the voice of Bowser, the King of Bowser and the main antagonist of Nintendo’s Mario series. Black began acting at age 13 and rose to fame with starring roles in High Fidelity, Orange County, and School of Rock, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. He then appeared in “King Kong”, “The Holiday”, and played the voice of Po in the “Kung Fu Panda” series. Black received critical acclaim and several Best Actor nominations for his portrayal of Bernie Tiede in the 2011 biographical thriller film Barney. His recent credits include “Goosebumps,” the “Jumanji” series, and “The Minecraft Movie.”

Yoshi (Donald Glover)

Donald Glover provides the voice of Yoshi, the beloved green dinosaur who has appeared in countless Mario games. Before taking on the role of Mario and Luigi’s loyal sidekick, Glover voiced characters such as Marshall Lee in Adventure Time, Simba in Mufasa: The Lion King, and Miles Morales in Ultimate Spider-Man. Glover starred in the series “Community” and produced and starred in “Atlanta.” He also releases music under the stage name Childish Gambino. In 2024, he led Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson)

Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson plays Rosalina, a princess from outer space. She is also the adoptive mother of the Lumas, whom Larson describes as “star babies.” Larson, an avid video game player and fan of “Super Mario Galaxy,” joined the cast after having on-screen roles in films such as “The Marvels,” “Captain Marvel,” “Fast-X,” “The Glass Castle,” “Room,” and “Lessons in Chemistry.”

Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie)

Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr., the impulsive and enthusiastic heir to Bowser’s throne. Best known as one half of the Safdie brothers’ directorial duo of Uncut Gems and Good Time, Safdie’s latest film is The Smashing Machine. He has also expanded his on-screen presence with appearances on “Oppenheimer” and Showtime’s “The Curse.”

Fox MacLeod (Glen Powell)

Fox McCloud was a surprising addition to the Super Mario Galaxy Movie cast, as was voice actor Glen Powell. Fox is a space pilot who appears in the Nintendo video game Star Fox, but he crosses over with Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach in Super Smash Bros. fighting game. Fans hope that Fox’s participation will lead to more crossover films with other Nintendo characters. More recently, Powell has appeared in How to Make a Kill, The Running Man and Twisters after breaking out in Top Gun: Maverick.

Toad (Keegan-Michael Key)

Keegan-Michael Key voices Toad, a loyal Mushroom Kingdom resident who is one of Mario’s early allies. A versatile performer of comedy and voice acting, Key made a name for himself on Comedy Central’s “Key & Peele” and has since appeared in projects such as Netflix’s “The Prom,” Hulu’s “Reboot” and animated hits such as “The Lion King” and “Toy Story 4.”

Wart (Luis Guzman)

Luis Guzmán provides the voice of Wart, the villainous green frog. Nicknamed the “Crime King”, he is the leader of the nefarious group “8-Bit” and lives in a casino. Before stepping into the world of Mario, Guzman appeared in films such as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love, as well as Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, The Limey, and Traffic. He also played Gomez Addams in the Netflix series Wednesday.

Honey Queen (Issa Rae)

Issa Rae voices Honey Queen, the queen bee and ruler of the Honeyhive galaxy. However, Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not Ray’s first foray into voice acting. The actress, writer, and producer last lent her voice to the 2019 film Hair Love and 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Ray co-created, co-wrote and starred in HBO’s “Insecure,” and has also appeared in films such as “The Hate U Give,” “Little,” “The Photograph,” “The Lovebirds” and “Barbie.”

Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson)

Kevin Michael Richardson voices Kamek, Bowser’s calculating Magikoopa advisor and informant. A prolific voice actor, Richardson has had a decades-long career in the animation industry, with credits on films such as “Family Guy,” “American Dad!,” “The Cleveland Show,” and “Teen Titans,” often using his unique baritone for authoritative roles and villainous roles.
