Adrian Grenier, who played Nate, the abusive boyfriend of Anne Hathaway’s up-and-coming fashion writer Andy in The Devil Wears Prada, recently told Page Six that he was “disappointed” not to be asked to appear in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
“We’re all fans of this movie, whether we’re in it or not,” he said. “Obviously I was disappointed that I wasn’t approached for a sequel, but I also understand that there’s some backlash to the character of Nate, so maybe that has something to do with it. But I think it just leaves room for a spinoff.”
When asked if he thought fan backlash against Nate was the reason he wasn’t asked to appear in the sequel, Grenier replied, “On the contrary, what?” He added, “In any case, this is a disappointment. Either way, it leaves room for a beautiful spin-off where Nate gets his own movie.”
The Devil Wears Prada, based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, was released in 2006 and stars Hathaway as Andy Sachs, an overachieving college graduate who becomes an assistant to domineering fashion media mogul Miranda Priestley, played by Meryl Streep. Grenier’s character, Nate, was largely disliked in the online world for being Andy’s erratic and unsupportive boyfriend during a tumultuous time when Andy was working at Runway Magazine. Other cast members include Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, and Tracy Thoms.
The Devil Wears Prada 2, which opens in theaters on May 1st, follows Andy and Miranda as they compete with their former colleague Emily in the declining print journalism industry. Streep, Hathaway, Blunt and Tucci will once again lead the cast, joined by series newcomers Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Lady Gaga, Amanda Morrow and BJ Novak. The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel is returning to direct the sequel. Aline Brosh McKenna and Weisberger, who wrote the screenplay for the original film, also wrote the sequel.
