Taylor Swift revealed the engagement ring after announcing his engagement to Travis Kelce on August 26th. The ring looks like an antique cushion cut or an old mine diamond with unique design elements.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged. And the singer didn’t make the world wait to see in detail her huge cushion-cut diamond engagement ring, a custom piece designed by New York Jeweler Artifex Fine Jewelry and Travis Kelce. Swift included a close-up shot in her announcement post.
The piece is truly unique, the jeweller tells Elle.
“Taylor’s rings have taken a very step forward with the individuality and desire for artistry in engagement rings,” says Steph Mazuela, who founded a uniquely named brand that creates bespoke engagement rings.
“We believe it has a romantic, dreamy heirloom look,” said Ann Grimmett, vice president of merchandising at Jared Jewelers.
And Lauren Boc, founder and CEO of Hera Fine Jewelry, highlights its unique design. “Many celebrities’ engagement rings are huge diamonds with a common setting, but this design is really unique and doesn’t look like someone else’s ring,” she says. “I love that Taylor’s rings have a well-known, yet incredibly large diamonds and a truly thoughtful and unique design.”
Boc, Grimmett and Mazuera spoke with Elle about details of Swift’s rings, their estimates, and how to reflect and set up bridal jewelry trends.
Swift and Kelce chose what looked like antique cushion cuts or old mine cut diamonds.
“It looks like a very elongated, antique cushion cut diamond with a wide taper band that graduates from the round diamond accent on the shoulder,” Bock says.
She explains in detail. “The cushion-cut diamonds are definitely elongated than average. The antique cut and elongated ratio give the ring a truly unique look and a lot of presence in her hands. I don’t think the diamond is a true antique based on shape, but I don’t think it looks like an antique or an old minecut style.
Mazuela agreed that it could be an elongated antique cushion cut or an old mine cut, saying, “Antique cut diamonds have fewer larger facets than modern stones. There is less ice glow, more reflective flash, and the antique cut is very romantic.
Mazuela shared photos of antique cuts and latest cut diamonds for reference.
Grimet believes it is an elongated old mine-cut diamond.
Swift’s center stones range from 7 to 12 carats and are worth at least $250,000.
Swift stones are by no means small. Grimmett estimates its size at 7-9 carats, but BOC considers it to be “an almost 8 carat elongated antique cushion cut diamond” and “this very elongated antique cushion cut is rare and very difficult to price.
Grimmett places the ring value between $250,000 and $500,000.
The Swift ring includes round diamond side stones.
Swift’s center diamond is not the only shorter in her ring. The ring contains two side stones. “The Sidestones look like a small round that contributes to a more vintage look, along with the half moon,” says Grimmett.
Swift’s wide band appears to contain hand-carved details.
“This is almost certainly an unparalleled piece of work, perhaps fully explained by hand,” explains Mazuela. “The details of the handcuts of the ring shank are particularly noteworthy.”
The setting appears to have metal halos and prongs for a unique and romantic touch.
Boc praises the ring setting. “From the photo (from Swift), it appears that there is a thin metal wall surrounding the stone.
“The combination of metal halos and prongs is also very unusual when it’s correct about that element of the setting. I’ve made some metal halos for my Spara custom client. The whole team always loves the finished look.
Mazuela offers a similar take. “The diamonds have prongs, but the metal can be seen around the stone, creating a beautifully framed effect. The overall design is vintage-inspired and a strong emphasis on craftsmanship.”
Swift’s ring taps on the elongated stone and gold trends, but with a twist of its own.
Swift’s best friend Selena Gomez also has a very popular choice, a long, elongated central stone (marquise). “Hella’s clients have requested a key element of this ring. The elongated cushion cut and the wide taper band with some details are both very popular,” says Boc.
Mazuela agrees: “The design coincides with current trends towards elongated diamond shapes, especially antique cushion cuts, vintage-style settings, and highly unique and customized pieces.
“I think more people are eager to have an engagement ring that feels deeply and personally for them. Trendy is a piece that cannot be replicated or defined,” she adds.
Grimmet summed it up, saying that Swift’s rings showcase “the latest trends in bold gold looks, flashy cuts, and oversized elongated stones.”
