Elon Musk’s campaign against Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is raising eyebrows in Hollywood. That’s because the new millionaire has vowed to use his AI tool, Grok, to “produce a historically accurate feature film of the Odyssey by the end of the year that is faithful to Homer’s art.” Musk also shared a three-minute clip of an AI-generated scene adapted from a poem created by a Grok user.
A big name in the film industry, “Doctor Strange” and “Black Phone” director Scott Derrickson, pulled no punches when he directly addressed Musk on social media. “Obviously @elonmusk knows nothing about movies and stopped reading in his 20s,” Derrickson wrote on Musk’s social media platform X. “His opinions on art are worthless.”
The Tesla mogul has been heavily criticizing Nolan’s The Odyssey long before its release due to what he perceives to be some “woke” casting decisions. “Chris Nolan is an anti-white racist,” Musk wrote in March about casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, claiming the director made the decision “because he wants the award.” “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity,” Musk said, calling the casting an “insult” to Homer. Musk also took aim at Elliot Page, who plays Sinon in “The Odyssey,” reposting comments mocking the transgender actor’s masculinity.
“The Odyssey” isn’t the first movie Musk has criticized about X. He similarly mocked the feminist-themed “Barbie” and Disney’s “Snow White” reboot, led by Rachel Zegler. The anti-Awakening backlash against The Odyssey didn’t seem to matter. The Matt Damon-starring blockbuster has grossed $264 million worldwide and continues to sell out in theaters months in advance.
