Jimmy Kimmel is currently on summer break from hosting a late-night talk show on ABC, but that doesn’t stop him from continuing to take aim at Republicans. Kimmel’s latest target is Sen. Mitch McConnell, who posted a photo of himself on social media as proof he is alive amid questions about the 84-year-old politician’s health. McConnell was hospitalized on June 14th.
McConnell posted a photo on Instagram of himself posing in bed next to President Trump’s former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. McConnell was holding a copy of the Sunday edition of the Washington Post, apparently to confirm the date the photo was taken and quell widespread speculation about his declining health. The photo only raised further questions about McConnell’s health, as many questioned the photo’s legitimacy.
Kimmel mocked McConnell by posting an identical photo on Instagram with Kimmel’s face clearly photoshopped onto McConnell’s body. The late night host wrote in the caption: “To everyone who asked, I feel great.”
In an update on his health, McConnell said: “Doctors confirmed that I did not have any broken bones or concussion. I did not have a heart attack or stroke. There was no tumor or bleeding. However, I briefly lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital. While I have received extensive treatment over the last few weeks, I have also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”
Kimmel’s mock photo was widely praised on social media. Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett praised the comedian, writing, “You’ll never miss it!” Fellow comedian Will Sasso glossed over skepticism about McConnell’s photo by commenting, “I don’t buy it. Kimmel looks much younger in this photo – it was probably taken years ago.”
