Anna Nicole Smith’s ex Larry Birkhead has spoken out against the upcoming film “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” which tells the story of Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who was involved in Smith’s 2007 death.
“We absolutely object to Anna Nicole’s life, my life, my daughter’s life being used in a movie,” Birkhead said in a new interview with “Entertainment Tonight.”
“Then we created a character who was probably a doctor that people should trust.”
“Trust Me, I’m a Doctor” is based on Mr. Kapoor’s 2017 book, in which he details his experience as Mr. Smith’s personal physician before he overdosed at age 39.
Kapoor was charged with illegally funneling excess prescription drugs to Playboy models, but was acquitted at trial in 2010. Kal Penn plays Kapoor in the movie.
Birkhead, who dated Smith from 2003 to 2006 and is the father of their 19-year-old daughter Dannielynn, told ET that he tried to block a new Kapoor biopic from being made.
“I actually spoke with this doctor and his representative. I warned them about the harm and emotional distress this would cause not only to me, but most importantly to Dannielynn, and how this could affect her and what she sees,” the 53-year-old photographer said.
Birkhead also said Smith’s story has been “told out several times” before, including in a “Law & Order” episode and a 2013 Lifetime movie starring Agnes Bruckner.
Abbie Cornish, who plays Smith in “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” also doesn’t have Birkhead’s stamp of approval.
“I’m sure she’s probably a nice girl and a great actress, but I don’t think she fully embodies Anna Nicole,” Birkhead said. “And it’s not really an attack on her.”
“I have yet to meet anyone who really embodies the spirit, look and personality of Anna Nicole,” he added.
Birkhead also revealed that he has taken legal action to prevent the release of the biopic.
“I have filed a complaint with the Medical Board of California regarding Dr. Kapoor’s participation in this film,” the father of one said. “I’m going to let the process unfold naturally and see what they have to say about it.”
As for Dannielynn, Birkhead said her daughter “had some choice words” to describe a mother who was taken advantage of by Kapoor.
“I don’t want to speak for her on this, but she had some choice words for this doctor and this project,” he said.
Birkhead also explained that even though Dannielynn is over 18, his job as a father is still “to protect her every day.”
“Trust Me, I’m a Doctor” will be released in theaters on October 16th.
