Emma Heming and her husband’s ex-wife celebrated their milestone 50th birthday with a huge party. She knew that was what her husband, Bruce Willis, had done for her.
In a group photo from the celebration shared via Instagram on Friday, the caregiver advocate poses next to Demi Moore and stepdaughter Talulah Willis.
In another photo, Hemming poses arm-in-arm with Talulah, 32, who posed for a snapshot cradling a small puppy.
Other photos revealed that Hemming’s party included a taco truck, a two-tiered cake and lots of friends, but she revealed in the caption that she initially didn’t think she’d do much to celebrate her 50th birthday as her husband Bruce continues to battle frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
I remembered that a friend kept asking her, “What are you doing to celebrate your 50th?” Ms. Hemming writes that her “answer was always the same: nothing.”
“To be honest, I’m not going through a particularly social or celebratory period in my life,” she continued. But the friend persisted, and Hemming eventually wrote that he “began to imagine what the celebration would be like.”
“Friends and family gathered at my home,” she wrote. “Tacos. Margaritas. Chocolate cake. Not the rich, fancy ones, but the fluffy Duncan Hines ones, because that’s my favorite.”
“The more I thought about it,” Heming wrote, “the more I realized that milestones really matter. And if there’s any milestone worth celebrating, it’s 50.”
“I don’t want to look back on my life with regrets,” Hemming said. “I was wondering what Bruce would have done for me when I was 50.”
“If I had known what he did for my 40th birthday, I would have had a big celebration,” she said.
Ms Hemming said her friends and family “took over” and “gave her a night she will never forget.”
“My house was filled with family and friends who had witnessed so many parts of my life,” she wrote of the celebration. “Those who have come to me time and time again with love, loyalty, honesty, and understanding. What a great way to celebrate 50,” she concluded her post, noting, “The Knicks won that night too.”
On Thursday, Hemming posted a heartwarming nod to her husband on Instagram, including a video of him entertaining their daughters with a goofy “Happy Birthday” song for their last birthday.
In the snapshot, they are seen wearing party hats and hugging each other. “My 40s have been tough, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come as a wife, mother, care partner, and advocate,” she wrote, adding, “I’m also proud of the work we’re doing through the Emma and Bruce Willis Foundation and what’s next.”
She continued: “Together we are raising awareness of FTD, supporting caregivers, and advancing education and research.”
The Die Hard actor, who shares daughters Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12, with Hemming, retired from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia.
A year later, in 2023, the famous family, which includes Bruce and Moore’s two other daughters, Rumer, 37, and Scout, 34, announced the “Sixth Sense” star’s FTD diagnosis.
Since then, Hemming has been an advocate for people living with complex conditions and their caregivers.
“This journey opened my eyes to the reality that many families face when a loved one has frontotemporal dementia,” she said earlier this year when announcing the creation of the Emma and Bruce Willis Foundation for Dementia Research and Caregiver Support.
Mr Hemming, who received the Susan and See Newhouse Award of Hope at the Frontotemporal Degeneration Society’s Hope Rising Benefit in New York in March, added: “I believe deeply in the importance of supporting research while working hard to serve the caregivers who have so much on their plate every day.”
