Warner Bros.’ new specialty label “Clockwork” is in exclusive negotiations for a North American contract for “The Bandits of Rattle Creek,” a western starring Cannes jury president Park Chan-wook. One of the most talked-about packages at Cannes, the long-term initiative is set to star Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal and Tang Wei.
Clockwork is already on a roll after announcing at CinemaCon that it had acquired Sean Baker’s “Anora” sequel, “Ti Amo!” In April. The up-and-coming label will also release Ken Russell’s The Devils in October, after the Cannes premiere of the restored version. Clockwork is led by former Neon executive Christian Parks.
“The Rattle Creek Bandits” has been described as “an iconic tale of revenge and retribution set in the American West.” The project’s synopsis states, “A culmination of themes that have run throughout Park Chan-wook’s body of work, this film is an emotionally explosive and visually stunning meditation on the consequences of violence, family values, the power of memory, and the cost of true life.”
McConaughey has been attached to the project for several years, and after the script was selected by Blacklist in 2006, Amazon acquired the rights to the material and was eyeing McConaughey to star in 2019.
Park will also serve as a producer for Mojo Films along with Bradley Fisher (Zodiac). Moho Film’s Buck Jisung, Mike Medavoy and Georgia Kacandes will serve as executive producers.
WME and CAA represent the project, with legendary firm Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 representing international sales.
