On Monday night’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart criticized President Donald Trump for not getting “anything” out of his recent meeting with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China.
“But first of all, do you guys feel good? Do you feel safe? I know why. I know why you feel good. I know why you feel safe. Because Daddy’s home. Daddy’s home,” Stewart said at the beginning of his monologue. “When[Trump]was gone for a few days in China, we were scared. ‘Where’s daddy? I was so scared. Where’s daddy?'” But now he’s home, and I’m sure he brought back all the good things from China. Because, as we all know, there is no one, and I mean no one, who is as hard on the rhyming of “China” and “vagina” as Donald J. Trump. ”
Stewart then cut out footage of President Trump taking tough stances on China in the past, saying things like, “I’m the toughest person on China anywhere in the world,” and “I stood up to China like no administration has ever done before.”
Then the late night critic quipped, “Let’s see that famous toughness in action. Let them do it!”
Stewart then played a clip of Trump’s visit to China, where the president was much more gracious. “You are a great leader. I tell everyone that. You are a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like what I say, but I still say it because it’s the truth. I only tell the truth,” Xi said in one audio.
“It’s okay. There are many ways to negotiate. In some cases, you can use honey to get more flies,” Stewart joked. “So, Mr. President, what have we got? Lowering trade barriers? Helping Iran? Some delicious rare earth metals?”
Stewart then cut to Trump’s interview with Fox News’ Bret Bayer. Asked to reveal the most “important, specific thing” he took away from the meeting, Trump said, “I think the most important thing is the relationship. It’s all about the relationship.”
“So, nothing,” Stewart said. “Nothing for you! You flew to China… to personally confront our rival superpower over escalating trade and geopolitical tensions between us, and returned only on his Instagram? “Tariffs are in place, but we’re talking about a close friend right now. Well, he’s mine.”
