The HBO television series is set to premiere on Christmas Day later this year and will follow Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they return to Hogwarts for their second year and embark on an all-new adventure. Here’s everything we know so far about the second season.
Has Harry Potter been renewed for season 2?
yes! HBO announced on May 7 that season 2 has been greenlit, The Wrap has confirmed. Series co-showrunner Francesca Gardiner released a statement following news of the show’s renewal.
“As we planned an overlapping production schedule to wrap up Season 1 by Christmas and return to production on Season 2 this fall, it became clear that having a co-showrunner was key to maintaining momentum,” she said. “I’ve loved working with John[Brown]from the first day we met on ‘Succession’ to our recent work together on ‘Harry Potter.’ Not only do I have great admiration for his writing, he’s also a great collaborator and a wonderful person. We’re lucky to have him.”
Writer John Brown, who was promoted to co-showrunner alongside Gardiner, added, “I’m very excited to be working with Francesca as co-showrunner. I’ve had a great time writing for Philosopher’s Stone and would like to thank Francesca and HBO for believing in me to continue this incredible journey. It looks like you’re never too old to receive an invitation to Hogwarts.”
Has filming already begun for Harry Potter season 2?
Not yet, but soon. The Wrap confirmed that production would begin this fall, months ahead of season 1’s arrival.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys also revealed in a March 2026 interview with The Times that a second season is currently being written. “Our goal is not to leave a huge gap, especially as the children are growing up,” he explained. “It’s not going to be an annual thing. The show is too big, too big. But…they’re currently writing season two.”
What will Harry Potter season 2 be about?
In Season 2, it is likely that the second book in JK Rowling’s book series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will be adapted into an anime.
The official synopsis for the book reads, “That summer, the Dursleys are so mean and scary that all Harry Potter wants is to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he is packing up, Harry receives a warning from a strange, sassy creature named Dobby, who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will occur. And it will happen. Why? Harry’s second year at Hogwarts is filled with new suffering and horror.” Harry’s second year at Hogwarts brings with it a new wave of suffering and horror.” There are many problems, such as a new professor named Gilderoy Lockhart, a ghost called Moaning Myrtle that haunts the girls’ bathroom, and the unwanted attention of Ron Weasley’s sister Ginny, but when the real trouble begins, it will be Draco Malfoy who begins turning Hogwarts students to stone. Will Hagrid’s mysterious past finally be revealed? Or maybe it’s the person everyone at Hogwarts suspects the most…Harry Potter himself!”
Of course, fans who want to enjoy Season 2 can rewatch the second movie in the film series.

Who will be joining the cast?
Principal cast members Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Arabella Staunton (Hermione Granger), and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley) are likely to return for the show’s second season.
Gracie Cochran previously played Ginny Weasley in season 1, but will not be reprising her role in season 2. On May 18, Deadline reported that the role would be recast following Cochran’s exit from the series due to what his family described as “unforeseen circumstances.”
HBO has not yet announced the official ensemble for season 2, but other recurring cast members may include:

A premiere date for Season 2 of the show has not yet been set, so fans should stay tuned for updates after Season 1’s December 25 premiere.
